Local life and culture

The Plateau de Saclay is bordered by two valleys, the Bièvre valley to the north and the Yvette valley to the south. It is situated on the edge of the Haute Vallée de Chevreuse Regional Nature Reserve. There are two lakes on the plateau, fed by a drainage system dating back to the time of Louis XIV, consisting of a network of 'rigoles', or drains, which channel the water to supply the fountains in the gardens of Versailles via the Buc aqueduct. One of the lakes is now an ornithological park.

As well as a rich cultural heritage stretching as far back as prehistoric and Gallo-Roman times, the region boasts a number of interesting museums, such as the cloth museum in Jouy, the photography museum in Bièvres and the Foujita museum which will be opening shortly in Villiers-le-Bâcle. Other leisure facilities include 3 golf courses, 6 horse riding centres and a water sports complex at Gif-sur-Yvette. There are numerous hiking and cycle paths within easy reach. For full details contact the Vallée de Chevreuse Tourist Office, or the other tourist offices in the region, or the town halls.
